Luciano Sánchez is a full professor at the University of Oviedo, in the area of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, Department of Computer Science. Since 2022, he has been Director of the TotalEnergies Chair in Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence at the same university. He coordinates the Metrology and Models research group (Research Portal) and is a founding partner of the group spin-off, IDalia Intelligent Data Analysis S.L. He has been an ANEP expert since 1995 and an ACSUCYL expert since 2012. He is an area editor of International Journal of Approximate Reasoning and Array (Elsevier), and in other open-access journals.
Research Lines
- His research covers the theoretical study of algorithms for the mathematical modeling of systems and intelligent data analysis, as well as their application to industrial modeling, signal processing, and dimensional metrology, with special interest in low-quality data.
Positions Held
Visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley in 1995, and at General Electric (GE Global Research, Schenectady, New York) in 1996. Member of the Technical Committee for Project Evaluation of the National R&D Plan, in the Information Technologies area (TIN), in 2009, 2015, 2016, and 2022; member of the Juan de la Cierva grants evaluation committee in 2021 and 2024; and manager of Sub-area RED-IA-8 in the Division of Coordination, Evaluation, and Scientific-Technical Monitoring of the Spanish State Research Agency in 2022.

He has supervised 13 doctoral theses. He is the author of more than 100 publications in international journals and a similar number of conference contributions and book chapters. Principal investigator in 8 projects of the National R&D Plan, 5 projects of the Regional Plan of the Principality of Asturias, and principal responsible for 18 research contracts (with Treelogic in 2012-2014, Gamesa Corp in 2012-2014, Rolls-Royce Deutchsland KG in 2017, Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega in 2018-2019, RENFE-ENAGAS in 2017-18 and 2020-2023, TotalEnergies Clientes in 2022-23, Zitrón S.A. in 2022-2023, and Medtronic Ibérica in 2023). Inventor of 4 patents (two national patents, with Inspección Técnica de Vehículos de Asturias, S. A. in 2011 and KLK Electromateriales S.A. in 2013; one U.S. patent with Rolls-Royce Deutschland Ltd & Co KG in 2018; and one European patent with the same company in 2017).
